If I could sum up this Halloween at the 1st Bank Center in one word, that word would be relentless. Everyone came out to party and everyone came out to party hard. Behind the scenes, there were stretchers coming and going the whole night. While it is unfortunate that some party goers had a little too much fun (I wish them all well), this is an indication of one hell of a party.
By the end of the 1st set, the stadium seats were beginning to fill and the crowd on the floor had reached the front of the sound stage. By the end of the night, there was no room to move anywhere. As you can tell from my photos of the event, the same people at the front of the crowd during the beginning of the show are the same people there at the end. Nobody was missing a beat of this one. The openers did their part. Dada Life’s “Kick Out the Epic Motherfu**er” continues to be a staple song to remix for many artists, but some samples from outside the genre were a refreshing inclusion to the night. The White Stripes “7 Nation Army” was one that I especially enjoyed. Tommy Trash brought some heat, with the notable inclusion of the “Fresh Prince” theme that had everyone singing along. When Skrillex and Knife Party hit the stage, opening with some pyrotechnics that surprised everyone, the whole place went crazy. And it stayed crazy. Like I said, relentless.
Obviously, I have to do a little critiquing. This was the first show I have seen where the artists were on a second story stage. For the haunted house setup was cool, but I personally didn’t like the distance between the artists and the crowd. You couldn’t see them. That being said, you certainly could hear them loud and clear. As for the pairing- having Skrillex and Knife Party on stage at the same time- I think it was successful. However, from what I could see of them up on that stage, it looked like Skrillex was mixing significantly more than Knife Party. It may have been a better idea to just have Knife Party play alone before Skrillex.
Skrillex got on the mic a few times over the course of the night and reiterated his love for Colorado. Judging from that and the size of the crowd, I’d say he’ll be back next year and Halloween in Colorado may just become a tradition for Skrillex. I sure hope so.
