University of Colorado WelcomeFest 2012

August 25 was surely a sad day for anyone not a CU Boulder student as the University’s annual Welcomefest concert brought in a slew of talented artists for yet another great show. Local band Sunsquabi got things started as excited students began to file in. By the time Hoodie Allen took the stage, the eager crowds of drueling freshman girls outnumbered everyone else. But with freshman girls come every else, and the demographic leveled out just in time for a wicked set put together by the up and coming Minnesota.
Welcomefest has a history of taking up and comers and propelling them to full blown stardom. Pretty Lights can tell you all about it. I think this year- Minnesota is going to have similar good fortune. Though admittedly I am not terribly well versed, I had not heard any of Minnesota’s music before the show, but I definitely have done some listening since.  His sound was slick, dubby, and just plain fun. With Ghostland Observatory already being such a big name, Minnesota is the up and comer who stands to benefit immensely from this years show.
That being said, Ghostland may just go from big to bigger. Aaron Behrens stage presence radiates passion. The duo is a pair of bona-fide artists as well as general all-around badasses. Thomas Turner was on stage in an oversized Captain America type cape. On their Facebook page the duo lists under their influences, “anyone with balls,” and describes themselves as, “not a band, but an agreement between two friends to create something that not only heals their beat-driven hearts, but pleases their rock ‘n roll souls.” And they are not kidding. It wouldn’t surprise me if ACDC or Ned Schneebly showed up to one of their shows just to salute them. If you have not had the pleasure of going to a Ghostland show, do yourself a favor and scoot over to RageColorado’s photostream and check out photos of the show. You can also catch a glimpse of the super cool lasers that are becoming a signature of the duo.
