Welcome to the first installment of the new Rage Colorado product review section, where we test products on ourselves to help support our viewers music driven lifestyle! I'm sure some of you have seen the 'Sponsored Product' ad on the side of our page. Well, for the last 2 weeks we have been meticulously testing out these new 'party recovery patches' and we were actually surprisingly impressed. But first let's talk about the product itself.
The Zaca Life Recovery Patch is a 1inch x 1 inch gauze patch applied to the skin. It provides a transdermal supply of 11 different amino acids and nutrients to boost your mood and help your body absorb and process alcohol more efficiently. In effect, it will supposedly cure your ungodly hangover. And, the catch is, it's all organic. No sugar, no caffeine, no stimulants.
The ingredients are as followed:
- Prickly Pear - To reduce nausea, difficulty eating, and dry mouth
- Milk Thistle - To promote liver health
- Thiamine (B1) - To help your body break down alcohol
- Lipoic Acid - To act as an antioxidant
- B5 - To provide energy
- B3 - To provide energy
- Taurine - To help reverse liver damage from alcohol consumption
- Lycopene - To act as an antioxidant
- NAC - To help break down the amino acids
- Magnesium - To prevent hangover
- Vitamin C - To boost immune system response and act as an antioxidant
Notice all of these ingredients are supplements that you can get at your friendly Rite-Aid or CVS, depending on which side of the country you live on. Some, like Taurine and Vitamin B, can be found in energy drinks.
The instructions are to apply the patch on one of the designated areas (seen below) before you go out on the town and leave it on for a full 24 hours. Don't worry, you can shower with it on and it won't fall off.
The results of our testing were very surprising to say the least. Each of us tested out the patch on a moderate drinking night (3 - 5 standard drinks) and a heavy drinking night (5 - ∞ standard drinks). Also, the patch was applied around 2 hours before the first drink was consumed.
If you are someone who doesn't take a multi-vitamin or a vitamin B-complex on a regular basis, you will most likely feel a slight increase in mood or energy from the B and C vitamins. Not a 'high', but just a pep in your step.
Once the drinking began, all 3 test subjects reported a noticeable change in the buzz acquired from the alcohol consumption. The buzz felt much more clear headed and rejuvenating, without any reduction of the physical body high. This was somewhat similar to that of drinking a Red Bull before consuming alcohol. However, without the caffeine, this patch doesn't increase the risk of serious blackouts like the original Four-Lokos. However, during the heavy drinking night, this effect went away as the buzz quickly formed into a drunk.
So now to the hangover. First we would like to say that this is NOT a god send hangover cure. However, for both the moderate and heavy drinking nights, the hangover was substantially reduced. Of course, the more you drink, the more the hangover. And of course, the less water you drink, the more the hangover.

Overall, this product was actually really helpful and even worked after one test subject consumed 2 bottles of Bogle Merlot in one night. Yeah that's right all you wine aficionados, no longer do you have to suffer through terrible wine hangovers! Appreciate your full bodied red cabernet.
Additionally, it remained effective when drinking 2 nights in a row (while applying a patch each time).
Unfortunately, these patches are moderately expensive. About $20 for a pack of 6 (for a total of 6 nights of drinking). However, when you compare it to the cost of actually buying bottles of all those nutrients, your actually saving a lot of money. And even if you drink every night of the weekend (including Thursdays for all the college students), that would still last you 2 weeks. With the benefits this product provided us, $20 for 2 weeks seems pretty reasonable. Honestly, thats about a fifth of what most of you drop at the bar in one night.
Bottom line. This is not a 100% hangover cure, but it sure as hell makes you feel a lot better. If I had to give you a % decrease in hangover, I'd realistically say it reduces about 75% of hangover symptoms and discomfort. With the additional boost it provides during your drinking escapades, I would say this is a very useful product that almost any concert goer and nightlife enthusiast could benefit from!
