The Weekly Scene 7/23/12

Follow us on Facebook

After a very long over due decision, The Weekly Scene is back! For those of you who are new to the site, The Weekly Scene is our once-a-week post to highlight what's going on this week. Of course you can always see this list in the 'This Week In Events' page (on the navigation bar at the top of the page), but in these posts we pull out specific artists and give them a shout out and let you know a little more about them than just the date they're coming. So here it goes!

While there is a lot to talk about today, first on my list to highlight is the lyrical genius in the picture above, Aesop Rock. Placed at number 19 out of the top 100 hip hop artists of the decade by the site betterPropaganda, Aesop Rock has definitely made some ripples in the scene. Originally from New York, Aesop was inspired by both the underground hip hop and rock scene's while he was growing up. He started rapping in the 1990's and has released 3 EPs and 6 albums, his last being released just 2 weeks ago on July 10th. His style is more abstract and, in my opinion, artistic. If you're into underground hip hop, I'd be surprised if you've never heard of Aesop, but if you haven't, go grab his new album Skelethon and listen to it all RIGHT NOW! Aesop makes his way to The Summit Music Hall (in downtown Denver) tomorrow, Tuesday the 24th. Tickets are only $20 so grab them while they're hot!

Next up on my radar this week is a band I actually just discovered thanks to this years Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Greensky Bluegrass. This 5 piece American bluegrass band was formed in 2000 and has toured constantly ever since then. 2006 is when they started to get wide recognition after winning Telluride Bluegrass Festival's band competition earning them a spot on the main stage for the following year. Their live performances and talent has gained them a nation wide fan base which just keeps on growing. The venue will also help make this show amazing. The Mishawaka Amphitheatre sits just outside of Ft. Collins. Nestled next to a river in between two mountains makes this a very unique concert going experience. Luckily the Mish was saved from the large forest fire in Ft. Collins this summer. This has to be the perfect place to see Greensky Bluegrass, except for maybe the Telluride main stage, but this is a close second. Greensky rocks the Mish this Friday, the 27th so be sure to get your plans set pretty quickly. There is free camping near the venue too if you make the show that much better. Tickets are $17.50 right now and $20 at the door.

Last of the highlights tonight is Florence + The Machine. After selling out Red Rocks Amphitheater so quickly, AEG decided to also add a show at the Wells Fargo Theatre (in the Colorado Convention Center) so those of you who didn't get tickets, you're still in luck! Only being around since 2007 the English indie band has made their way to the mainstream realm thanks to large support by the BBC. Their 2 albums have had huge success with the first album, 'Lungs', being one of the best selling albums of 2009 and 2010 and their second album, 'Ceremonials', debuting at number one in the UK and number six in America. With the 'Best New Artist' nomination at the Grammy's and playing the Nobel Peace Prize Concert this band has become highly demanded across the scene. Known best probably for their song 'Dog Days Are Over', Florence & The Machine have made waves in music since their debut. Not only does Florence have an amazing voice, but she really engages the crowd making their performances a lot of fun. Like I said, their Red Rocks concert on Wednesday, the 25th is completely sold out but tickets, though a little pricey, are available for the Wells Fargo Theatre in Denver (which I've heard is an amazing venue). Tickets range from $40 to $65, depending on where you want to sit. Below is a live video from the T In The Park Festival in Scotland performing their song 'Dog Days Are Over'.
